Gord Smith - Badminton coach remembered

SMITH, Gordon Christopher (Gord)

Gord Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at his home in Calgary, AB at the age of 63 years.

Gord is survived by his loving wife Mary; children Chris (Nicole), Julia (Sean) and Sean (Bronwen); grandchildren Connor, Liliana, Aedan and Wynn; as well as his brothers Dylan and Alex (Yvonne). Gord was born and raised in Charlottetown, PEI in an athletic home, where he was introduced to the sport of badminton as a teenager. He developed a passion for coaching and became a professional coach at the Boulevard Club in Toronto and the Calgary Winter Club, eventually being hired by Badminton Canada as Technical Director in Ottawa. His love of the West found him returning to Calgary in 1997 with his family to take on the role of General Manager of the Varsity Community Association. This was a place that he loved and from where he retired earlier this year.

Gord was an excellent cook and host, and loved to spend his time preparing meals for friends and family, never sharing all of the ingredients to his dishes to ensure they would return. His impact on the lives of his students, friends and community members was profound, and he will be missed by many. A Celebration of Gord's Life will be held at the Varsity Community Centre, 4303 Varsity Drive NW, Calgary, on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 29 St. NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N2, or Sport Calgary, Father David Bauer Olympic Arena, 2424 A University Drive NW, Calgary, AB T2N 3Y9.
