Canada/Ontario bid for the 2018 BWF World Junior Badminton Championships

On April 12th, Badminton Canada submitted its formal application to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for consideration to host the 2018 World Junior Badminton Championships.

Last hosted in Canada in 2004 (Richmond, BC), Badminton Canada has worked with Badminton Ontario to propose the competition be held at the Pan Am Centre in Markham.  Dates for the competition are to be confirmed by the BWF, but the Championships usually occur over a two week period in late October or early November.  Held every year, the World Junior Badminton Championships is the largest international competition within the BWF, usually attracting 35-40 nations and well over 500 participants in total – it features both a team competition and an individual competition.

Badminton Ontario has been working with Badminton Canada to ensure that there is a strong hosting legacy from the 2015 Pan American Games for the sport of Badminton in Markham and the GTA – the Pan Am Centre was purpose built to host national and international badminton competitions and Badminton Ontario has embarked upon an ambitious national and international hosting strategy that utilizes the Pan Am Centre every year.  This year, Canada and Ontario will host the 2017 Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships and it is Badminton Ontario’s intention to host Canada’s annual international senior competition, the Canadian Open, at the Pan Am Centre beginning in 2019.  “We believe that Markham and the GTA have a strong appetite to see the best badminton in the world and it is certainly our intention to bring that level of the game to this region on a continual basis” said Ian Moss, President of Badminton Ontario, “as importantly, the opportunity for our athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers to be engaged in the highest levels of competition at home provides immeasurable value and education to better both the presentation of the sport and the level of on court performance of our athletes”.

The BWF will make a final decision on the host country for the 2018 World Junior Badminton Championships in June of 2017, immediately following its Annual General Meeting in Brisbane, Australia.  Prior to that decision, BWF officials will travel to Markham for a site inspection, and Badminton Canada and Badminton Ontario delegates will make a further detailed presentation to the BWF at their AGM in late May.
