Criteria approved for upcoming Gold & Silver Alberta Junior Provincial Closed Championships

Badminton Alberta is pleased to announce the criteria for the upcoming Junior Gold and Silver Provincial Championships.  This criteria was developed to help make the numbers manageable at both Championships and to promote meaningful competition.

The first thing to note is that players will only be permitted to compete in one of the championships.  Some players will have to choose which tournament to enter.  Others will have that decision made for them, based on their Badminton Alberta rankings.  To access the rankings page, click the following link:

The second thing to note is that if a player is deemed a gold player in one age group, they must play gold provincials.  They may not bump up an age group to play in Silver Provincials.

The third thing to note is that a player must have competed in two Alberta Junior Circuit tournaments since September, 2023 in order to qualify for either provincial championships.

The criteria is laid out in the following manner:

If a male player is in the top 10 ranking spots in any discipline (singles, doubles or mixed doubles), they must play in Gold Provincials.  Silver Provincials is not an option.  If a female player is in the top 8 ranking spots in any discipline (singles, doubles or mixed doubles), they must play in Gold Provincials.  Silver Provincials is not an option.  The numbers are different because there is a significantly higher number of male athletes competing in our tournaments.

If a male player is ranked between 11 and 32 in any discipline (singles, doubles or mixed doubles) and not in the top 10 in any discipline, he has the choice to play Gold Provincials OR Silver Provincials.  If a female player is ranked between 9 and 24 in any discipline (singles, doubles or mixed doubles) and not in the top 8 of any discipline, she has the choice to play Gold Provincials OR Silver Provincials.

If a male player is not ranked in the top 32 in any discipline, he is only eligible to play Silver Provincials.  If a female player is not ranked in the top 24 in any discipline, she is only eligible to play Silver Provincials.

Special thanks to Competition Committee members Beth Richardson, Grace Gao and Ben Yang for their insight and commitment on this matter.

Badminton Alberta looks forward to running two very exciting and competitive Junior Provincial Championships in the next month and a half.  See you on the courts!
