Badminton Alberta Officials Development

Badminton Alberta offers education and training for people interested in officiating as a badminton umpire, line judge, or match control/tournament manager. 

 

Provincial Umpire Certification Program

 

Badminton Alberta offers Umpire training and certification in an effort to train officials for local, regional and provincial tournaments; to provide formal recognition for trained Official's; and to provide adequate training opportunities for officials interested in testing as a national level official. The Provincial Umpire Certification pathway has two stages:

1. Umpire In-Training:

Anyone interested in becoming an umpire will begin by registering for a Regional Umpire Course. The course can be found on the Coaching and Official's Courses Calendar and consists of a 3-hour in class theory session, followed by practical sessions during a sanctioned Provincial Tournament. The theory session will cover the fundamentals for umpring which will be used in the practical sessions where new umpires will shadow and receive training from experienced umpires. No previous experience is required but there are documents should be reviewed as pre-requisites for the course. After taking the course and completing the practical training, the participant is recognized as a Umpire In-Training as they volunteer time towards gaining more skills and experience on court at Provincial tournaments.

Requirements:

  • Must be 16 and above in age
  • Be a member of Badminton Alberta in good standing with a valid Badminton Alberta Official's License
  • Register and complete the Regional Umpire Course, including the practical sessions
  • Become familiar with the pre-requisite materials: Laws of Badminton, Vocabulary, Instructions to Technical Officials, BWF Umpire/Service Judge Manuals
  • Must complete E-PIC police background check or Sterling Backgroud Check 
  • Must complete NCCP "Safe Sport Training" and "Understanding Rule of Two" E-Learning courses on the CAC Locker
  • Maintain a Record of Experience

Umpires In-Training Can:

  • Receive Umpire Cards and Coin
  • Umpire at local community/club/ ASAA/School events
  • Umpire at Alberta Junior Circuit Bronze/Silver/Gold events and receive feedback from experienced umpires
  • Collect volunteer hours towards school or community programs

2. Provincial Umpire:

As an Umpire In-Training participates in events, Tournament Referees, mentors and the umpire instructor will assess Umpires In-Training over the course of a season and will recommend an Umpire In-Training to take the evaluation to become a Provincial Umpire once they are ready. The Umpire In-Training must complete a minimum of 50 officiated matches as an umpire or service judge, over a minimum of 2 tournaments to be eligible for the evaluation. The evaluation will consist of a written exam and an On-Court Assessment by the umpire instructor. If successful, an Umpire In-Training would become a certified Provincial Umpire in Alberta. Tournament Referees and mentors will assess on an ongoing basis at every tournament to provide constructive feedback to help Provincial Umpires improve towards National Certification.

Requirements:

  • Must be 16 and above in age
  • Be a member of Badminton Alberta in good standing with a valid Badminton Alberta Official's License
  • Complete a minimum of 50 officiated matches as an umpire or service judge, over a minimum of 2 tournaments 
  • Complete the written exam and on-court assessment
  • Must complete E-PIC police background check or Sterling Backgroud Check

  • Maintain a Record of Experience

Provincial Umpires Can:

  • Receive Umpire uniforms along with cards, coin and certificate
  • Umpire at any BA event (including AJC Bronze/Silver/Gold, Yonex Alberta Series Tournaments, Masters Events, Provincial Championships) independently
  • Receive an Umpire Honorarium for participating in BA events and can submit Official's Expense Claim forms 
  • Umpire/officiate at ACAC & CCAA events (or any Alberta collegiate/university level events)
  • Umpire at Alberta Winter Games or apply to umpire at Arctic Winter Games (only eligible if residing above the 55th Parallel) 
  • Receive continual assesment, feedback and recommendation for National Umpire Assessment/Certification

 

 

Line Judge Training

 

Badminton Alberta has developed educational materials and a program to train interested athletes, parents, teachers or volunteers on how to Line Judge in Badminton. The Line Judge is responsible for indicating to the umpire using specific signals, whether a shuttle has landed within or outside of the lines of a badminton court that they are assigned to monitor. The program aims to provide the necessary information through an online E-Learning course. Once the course is completed, participants can volunteer as a Line Judge to gain practical experience during any BA event. Match Control/Tournament Management Training

 

If you are interested in learning how to create draws, organize/manage a tournament, or become familiar with the Tournament Software platform, consider registering for Badminton Alberta's Match Control/Tournament Management Training Online Course. The course provides a guide on how to manage a Sanctioned Badminton Alberta event and can be adapted for use at schools, clubs or communities. Participants will be taught the basics of setting up draws, managing courts and scheduling, recording results of matches, creating consolation draws and many other topics related to managing a tournament.
